During the month of September, as a nation, we band together to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention. During this month, we take a moment to remember those that we have lost to suicide, as well as fundraise and make efforts into more research and raise awareness for the topic. We acknowledge the millions of lives that have been affected. Through community, culture, data, and research we are able to find means of helping a wide population of people who are struggling with suicidal ideation. For those who are struggling with suicidal ideation, call or text 988 to receive help.
Though there are valiant efforts being made to break the stigma around mental health, there is always going to be a preconceived notion that if someone is struggling with mental health, that they are weak. That is why there are prevention and awareness months, like National Suicide Prevention Month. There are multiple ways to get involved with raising awareness, even from at home. Here are a couple ways that you are able to get involved from home:
The Use of Social Media: Social Media is a rapidly growing forum for people to consume their information and news. The use of hashtags, such as #BeThe1To , increase engagement and the more people use the hashtag, the more the information attached to it gets spread.
Fundraising: There is numerous fundraisers that go on during the month of September. There are 5k's, instructional classes, donation links, and more that people can participate in to donate to the cause. Fundraising helps to increase the possibility for more efforts to be made in relation to the cause.
